Prince Harry breaks the silence, says ‘no other option’

Daily US Times, London: Prince Harry breaks his silence after a long debate about him and his wife, Meghan Markle. Both unprecedentedly denounced their royal titles.

Harry was speaking at an event on Sunday evening where he said he is “taking a leap of faith” in stepping back from being a senior royal, saying “there really was no other option”.

He said he and Meghan wanted to continue serving the Queen, but without public funding.

“Unfortunately, that wasn’t possible”, he added.

This is the first time Prince Harry breaks the silence after the couple said they wanted to stand down from being full-time working royals.

But Harry made sure that he and Meghan were “not walking away”.

“The UK is my home and a place that I love, that will never change,” he said in his speech.

The event was for Sentebale, the charity he co-founded, which helps children living with HIV in southern Africa.

In his speech, Prince Harry indicates false and misinformation about them on the issue.

“So I want you to hear the truth from me as much as I can share, not as a prince or a duke but as Harry”, Harry said.

He addressed that he would always have “the utmost respect for my grandmother, my commander in chief”.

“Our hope was to continue serving the Queen, the Commonwealth, and my military associations, but without public funding. Unfortunately, that wasn’t possible,” he said.

Royal deal of departure

The Queen released the terms under which Prince Harry and Meghan are allowed to make their private life.

According to the Buckingham Palace, the couple will no longer use their HRH titles and will not receive public funds. HRS is an abbreviation of His/Her Royal Highness.

They will no longer formally represent the Queen.

The Palace statement added the Duke and Duchess of Sussex intend to repay £2.4m of taxpayer money for the refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage, which will remain their UK family home.

The new arrangement comes into effect in spring this year.

The Queen talked with the couple and other royals on Monday about their future. She held that emergency meeting after the couple announced that they wanted to “step back” as senior royals.

On the statement, the Queen said following “many months of conversations and more recent discussions” she was “pleased that together we have found a constructive and supportive way forward for my grandson and his family”.

‘Years of challenges’

Harry said this was the decision he did not make lightly.

“It was so many months of talks after so many years of challenges. And I know I haven’t always gotten it right, but as far as this goes, there really was no other option.”

He said both of them were excited and hopeful when they got married.

“For those reasons, it brings me great sadness that it has come to this.”

“It was so many months of talks after so many years of challenges, and I know I haven’t always got it right, but as far as this goes there really was no other option”, the Duke added.
