England are notably one of the big teams to have never lifted the ICC Champions Trophy despite registering the second-most wins in the tournament’s history and finishing as runners-up twice.
The ninth edition of the competition is now all set to begin on Wednesday, February 19, 2025. England, led by Jos Buttler, are expected to face a tough challenge against the top eight teams in the world.
The previous edition of the tournament in 2017 was hosted by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) where the home side led by Eoin Morgan finished as semi-finalists, losing to eventual winners Pakistan. England used 12 players from their 15-man squad. Sam Billings, David Willey, and Chris Woakes did not get any playing time during the tournament.
Here, Mirror Sport takes a look at players from England’s 2017 team and what they are doing now.
After the 2017 Champions Trophy semi-final, Bairstow went on to represent England in 81 ODI matches over the next six years. As of now, he has been axed from the national team across all three formats after scoring just 234 runs in 12 ODIs at an average of 19.50 during the 2023 World Cup year. The former star recently featured in the SA20 for the Johannesburg Super Kings.
At 36, Hales is not in England’s plans anymore with his last ODI appearance coming in 2019. However, he made a stunning comeback during England’s 2022 T20 World Cup victory, most notably scoring an unbeaten 86 not out in the team’s 10-wicket semi-final win over favourites India.
Hales last featured in UAE’s ILT20 2025 season for the Desert Vipers, where his team lost in the final.
Root continues to remain an integral member of England’s Test team and is one of the most consistent players in the format. He is also a front-runner to break Sachin Tendulkar’s run record in Tests.
He made a return to the ODI team during the 2025 tour of India and is all set to take part in the 2025 edition of the Champions Trophy.
Morgan, the captain of England’s 2017 Champions Trophy team announced his international retirement in 2022. He has been largely involved with commentary and punditry work across the world as of 2025.
The hero of the 2019 World Cup, Stokes is currently the captain of England’s Test team. During the 2024 tour of New Zealand he tore hamstring and as a result was ruled out of being selected in the Champions Trophy squad.
After establishing himself as one of the finest wicket-keeper batters in the world, Buttler will lead England in the 2025 edition of the Champions Trophy. He is also involved in franchise tournaments across the world and is a key member of England’s T20I teams as well.
Ali called an end to his England career in September 2024 after featuring in the 2024 T20 World Cup squad. He, however, continues to play franchise cricket in leagues across the world including the Indian Premier League (IPL) and SA20.
Rashid’s role in the English team has not changed over the years – he remains their lead spin bowler in the white-ball format. From Morgan’s trusted magician to Buttler’s go-to-man, Rashid is set to feature in the 2025 Champions Trophy.
The right-arm quick last featured for England in 2019 and has since shifted his base to America., where he is currently involved in franchise cricket. He last featured in the Major League Cricket (MLC) tournament for San Francisco in July 2024.
The 35-year-old fast bowler will represent England in the 2025 Champions Trophy. Wood, who used to face a constant battle against injuries, has now represented the national team in all three formats since 2024.
Ball was phased out of the England setup by 2018 and was not a part of the team’s World Cup-winning squad of 2019. He continues to be involved in the domestic scene and represented Somerset at the T20 Blast last year.
After being dropped from the 2017 Champions Trophy semi-finals due to poor performances, he made a stunning comeback and played a key role as an opener in England’s 2019 World Cup victory.
As of 2025, Roy is not part of the England setup and was most recently involved in UAE’s ILT20 league. After being snubbed from the national side, he admitted being heartbroken as the team looks to move on to the next generation of cricketers.
