This is the first time since 2006, Williams has failed to advance past the third round at Melbourne Park. Serena falls to 108-5 in her career during the first week of hard court majors.

Friday’s defeat extends Serena’s long seek for a major trophy as she last won the Australian Open in 2017 while pregnant with daughter Alexis Olympia.

Williams is 38 and she won her first WTA title two weeks ago since 2017. She is now one Grand Slam title away from tying Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24.

Williams acknowledged that she has made too many errors in the match.

“Like I said, it’s not about the tournament. It’s just like I can’t play like that. Like, I literally can’t do that again. That’s unprofessional. It’s not cool.

“I’m way too old to play like this at this stage of my career. It’s such a big tournament. It’s no excuse, to be honest. I’m definitely going to be training tomorrow. That’s first and foremost, to make sure I don’t do this again.”
