Daily US Times, Paris: A sex video of Benjamin Griveaux has demolished the hopes of becoming mayor of Paris. Griveaux was the candidate of the French ruling party.

The ex-spokesman from Emanuel Macron, President of France, already trailing in the race, was apparently targeted by a Russian protest artist accusing him of hypocrisy.

Mr. Griveaux, 41, said no one should be subjected to such abuse.

The sex video, which shows a man in a compromising position, quickly spread on social media late on Thursday.

Petr Pavlensky, acknowledged that he had posted the video online. He sought asylum from Russia in 2017.

How France reacted?

The video created a huge outcry in France while opponents from across the political spectrum voiced their outrage.

Many politicians condemned the leaking as incumbent Mayor Anne Hidalgo appealed for respect for people’s private lives, while far-left leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon condemned the attack as “odious”. Marine Le Pen, a far-right leader suggested that for the sake of democracy Mr. Griveaux should perhaps not have resigned.

Interior Minister Christophe Castaner warned that publishing videos without the author’s consent was an offense punishable by a significant fine and up to two years in jail while Prime Minister Edouard Philippe expressed his support for his former colleague.

The video was posted on a very little known website. The website then alleged that Mr. Griveaux had exchanged intimate mobile phone messages with a young woman and sent her a personal video.

The link of the site was shared by an MP who was forced to resign from Mr. Macron’s Republic on the Move (LREM) party in late 2018.

While interviewing with BFMTV news channel, Mr. Griveaux said that for the past year he and his family had been subjected to “defamatory remarks, lies, rumors, anonymous attacks… and even death threats”.

“This torrent of mud has affected me and above all hurt the people I love.”

Mr. Griveaux’s lawyer said he will press charge over the publication of the video which he claimed a violation to private life.
