Snow squall warning issued for eastern Ontario

Snow squalls will fall on eastern Ontario Sunday morning, according to Environment Canada. The agency also issued a statement about strong winds expected Monday for residents of Kingston and other communities on Lake Ontario.

The snow squall warning was issued around 10:20 a.m. and is expected to last until noon. It includes the southernmost parts of Ottawa, as far south as Perth and Brockville and as far east as Hawkesbury and Lancaster.

Environment Canada warned that bursts of brief, intense snowfall will limit visibility quickly and unexpectedly. Wind gusts could reach 60 km/h and conditions may change rapidly.

Snow squalls are moderate to heavy flurries driven by strong, gusty winds that can materialize with little warning and make it very hard to see.

Windchill could make Sunday morning in Ottawa feel as cold as –13 C in the morning and –8 C in the afternoon. The forecasted low overnight is –7 C.

The special weather statement for Kingston, Belleville, and other Lake Ontario communities was issued at 6:45 a.m. It warned that strong winds may reach up to 90 km/h and are expected to develop Monday afternoon and continue through the day.

The agency noted that the winds could toss any loose objects or cause tree branches to break, and power outages are possible.

On Monday in Kingston, the forecasted high is –1 C with windchill possibly making it feel like –14 C. The overnight low is –11 C.

Kingston has warming centres and overnight resources. Belleville operates an overnight warming centre at 240 Bridge St. West, the former exhibition grounds.
