Some schools in Nova Scotia closed as snowfall approaches

Many schools in Nova Scotia are closed today as a snowfall makes its way across the region.

CBC meteorologist Ryan Snoddon said snow will begin this morning for western areas and then throughout the afternoon for central and eastern areas of the province.

A number of schools are closed or are closing early:

  • Tri-County Regional Centre for Education: All schools are closed.
  • Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education: All schools are closed.
  • South Shore Regional Centre for Education: All schools and worksites are closed.
  • Halifax Regional Centre for Education: All schools will dismiss two hours early.
  • Chignecto-Central Regional Centre for Education: All schools are closed today. Offices and work sites remain open.
  • Strait Regional Centre for Education: Classes are cancelled at Pleasant Bay School.
  • Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education: Classes are cancelled for all students north of Smokey.
  • CSAP: Classes are cancelled in schools in the Sud and Métro clusters.

Most of Nova Scotia can expect snow on the roads and continuing to fall for the commute Wednesday afternoon and evening.

The system is expected to bring widespread snowfall totals of five to 10 centimetres for Wednesday afternoon and then another five to 10 centimetres for the evening and overnight.

CBC meteorologist Ryan Snoddon says most of Nova Scotia can expect snow on the roads for the commute Wednesday afternoon and evening.

Snow may mix with rain along the Atlantic coastline on Wednesday afternoon, keeping amounts a bit lower.

While the bulk of the snow will have departed, Snoddon said we will see some lingering flurries and a few more centimetres possible into Thursday morning, especially over eastern areas.

Thursday will be very cold across Nova Scotia with highs in the -8 to -12 degree range and northwest winds gusting near 50 km/h keeping wind chills in the -15 to -25 degree range.

Snoddon said the active pattern will continue with yet another system looking set to track on Friday. The current timing of the low again looks likely to bring some snow during the afternoon commute.
