Stubborn Brits still reeling after major change to Snickers bars – 35 years ago

Chocolate companies are often bringing out new products and changing their exisiting ones, but there are some chocolate changes you never get over, including when Marathon bars were renamed Snickers – 35 years ago.

In a poll, 14% found the rebranding in 1990 hard to take and 18% are still reeling from Opal Fruits switching to Starburst in 1998. Overall, 86% of people polled for Virgin Media saw themselves as creatures of habit.

Other changes people have struggled to get over include pounds and ounces becoming grams and kilograms, and red passports changing to blue. And despite more than 50 years passing, some still have not made peace with shillings changing to pounds.

Psychologist Dr Becky Spelman said: “As human beings, we are wired to seek stability. Familiarity provides a sense of security and when something we’ve known for a long time – whether it’s a brand, a routine or a cultural tradition – changes, it disrupts that sense of stability. Given time, our brains adjust and what once felt unfamiliar becomes second nature.”

The poll found 18% were still adjusting to Ronaldo’s return to manchester-united-fc>Manchester United in 2021 and 16% to Lewis Hamilton’s switch to Ferrari instead of Mercedes this F1 season. Dr Becky said: “Sports create a sense of continuity, and we like to believe that certain players will always be associated with specific teams.

“When an icon like David Beckham leaves Manchester United or Lewis Hamilton switches from Mercedes to Ferrari, it disrupts that expectation. It’s the same psychological reaction people have when a well-loved actor is replaced in a long-running film franchise—it challenges the sense of consistency we subconsciously rely on. The longer someone holds a position, the harder it is to accept a change.”
