Surface star ‘lets slip’ character is ‘out for revenge’ in series two

Oliver Jackson-Cohen has teased what’s to come in the second series of Surface. The Apple TV+ show will be back on screens later this month with a new season.

Ahead of its release, Oliver appeared on BBC’s The One Show alongside Surface co-star Gugu Mbatha-Raw. The duo chatted to hosts Clara Amfo and Lauren Laverne during Wednesday’s (19 February) episode of the chat show, sharing some details about the upcoming episodes.

Oliver, who plays James in Surface, revealed his character is “out for revenge” this time round, as he attempts to get back at estranged wife Sophie, portrayed by Gugu.

He said: “This show as a whole, you never really know who to trust. So, that’s kind of the fun of the show. You go down one avenue with someone, and then it gets turned on its head. So, all the characters live in this grey area.

“James is back for revenge after his wife’s left. He basically runs a truck through her life, like every loving husband does.”

Meanwhile, Gugu, who is also an executive producer on the second season of Surface, revealed the show “really opens up” this time round, and there’s plenty of new faces amongst the cast.

Surface, an American psychological thriller, was first released in July 2022. It focuses on Sophie, who lost all of her recent memories after trying to take her own life, as she tries to piece together the reasons for her attempted suicide.

The synopsis for the new series reads: “The second chapter of Surface follows Sophie to London to unravel the secrets of her past. Having suffered an injury that robbed her of her memories, Sophie follows the few clues she has, using her vast stolen resources to embed herself in elite British society and discovering a possible connection to a beautiful heiress.

“But everything changes when a journalist contacts her out of the blue, and Sophie realizes they were working together to expose a shocking scandal about the dangerous people she’s now become close to.”

The eight-part second season of Surface premieres on Apple TV+ on 21 February, with new episodes airing every Friday until 11 April.

The One Show airs on weekdays on BBC One at 7pm. Surface series two will begin streaming on Apple TV on Friday, 21 February.
