The Fall frontman Mark E Smith‘s will has been revealed after his death aged 60 in 2018.
It’s said the star didn’t leave any money to his “soulmate” partner at the time of his death. Instead, he left the majority of his £500,000 will to his three sisters and his mum. A neighbour living close to his home is also said to have received some of his estate.
Smith died from lung and kidney cancer. At the time of his death he was in a relationship with the band’s manager Pamela Vander. She described the star as her “soulmate” in a tribute after his passing.
But as his will was made public, it was revealed she won’t receive any of his money. After debts, expenses and funeral costs, Smith’s estate was valued at £484,449. It showed approximately £226,000 of that was raised through the sale of his home in Prestwich.
The will was dated just five weeks before his death on January 24, 2018. In it, Smith made it known he wanted the proceeds of the house sale to be split between his three sisters Suzanne, Caroline and Barbara. He then made clear he wanted the rest of his estate to be divided between his mum Irene and a neighbour, who had been close to his home.
Smith’s rise to fame came with his band The Fall in the 70s. He was a cult figure and led them despite many lineup changes over the course of their 42-year existence. In total, the band released 32 studio albums.
The 60-year-old rocker had been forced to cancel a string of gigs in 2017 after he fell ill over Christmas 2016. However, doctors were seemingly unsure how to treat him when he was rushed to hospital with multiple “bizarre and rare” health problems, as his manager Pam Vander said at the time.
A brawl broke out at his funeral, but his ex-bandmates said at the time: “He would have loved it.” Guitarist Ben Pritchard had claimed there were chaotic scenes at the maverick frontman’s send-off.
He said: “Just about managed to escape with my life from Mark E Smith’s funeral. The ceremony itself was nice, touching in places. The wake, however, didn’t last half an hour before bottles were thrown and drinks poured over people. Total disrespect, he’d have loved it.”
