Daily US Times, Ohio: President Trump went after the Democrats for passing a resolution in the House of Representatives that sought to limit his ability to use military force against Iran.
Trump criticized the steps at a campaign rally at Toledo’s Huntington Center. The vote cast mostly along party lines, 224 to 194.
Trump mocked the resolution saying, “You should get permission from Congress,” adding that “You should tell us what you’re going to do so we can call up the fake news and we can leak it.”
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced the vote would be held after Trump ordered to kill top Iranian General Qasem Soleimani in Iraq. Today’s vote was the continuation of that process.
The resolution will now go to the Senate, where its fate is uncertain as to the Senate majority held by the Trump’s Republican Party. If it gets passed in Senate as well, its practical effect is yet uncertain.
According to the resolution, further military action against Iran would need a declaration of war by Congress.
But the resolution will not be applicable if “such use of the Armed Forces is necessary and appropriate to defend against an imminent armed attack upon the United States, its territories or possessions, or its Armed Forces, consistent with the requirements of the War Powers Resolution.”
Trump administration justified Soleimani’s killing claiming him as an “imminent threat” to the US though lack of evidence creates growing concerns over the administration claims.
“We didn’t have time to call up Nancy [Pelosi], who is not operating with a full deck,” Trump said.
Trump also mocked Rep. Adam Schiff, a California Democrat and the head of the House Intelligence Committee, who managed the impeachment inquiry into the president.
“He buys the smallest shirt collar you can get, and it’s loose.”
The President attacked 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders too.
“Crazy Bernie has condemned the U.S. military strike on Soleimani, the world’s top terrorist,” Trump said.
