Daily US Times: President Donald Trump has threatened to send more federal law enforcement officers to major cities across the countries to control ongoing protests.

On Monday, Mr Trump criticised a number of cities run by “liberal Democrats”, including New York and Chicago, saying their leaders were afraid to act.

The US President said officers sent to Oregon had done a “fantastic job” restoring order amid days of protests in Portland.

Local officials say the federal law enforcement officers are making matters worse.

State leaders have demanded Mr Trump remove the federal officers from Portland, accusing him of escalating the situation as a political stunt in an election year.

on Monday, speaking at the White House, Mr Trump reiterated his call for law and order.

He said: “We’re sending law enforcement. We can’t let this happen to the cities.”

He specifically named Chicago, New York City, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Detroit, and Oakland in discussing problems with violence.

“We’re not going to let this happen in our country, all run by liberal Democrats.”

Mr Trump also praised the efforts of the controversial federal law enforcement in Portland. The city has seen ongoing protests against police brutality against the black Americans since the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, in Minnesota in May.

Mr Floyd’s murder sparked a massive protest across the country while several cities have seen unrest and violence. Police also have been accused of using excessive power.

Two weeks ago, Mr Trump deployed the personnel to the US west coast city to quell the civil unrest.

Some officers have used unmarked cars and worn military-style camouflage on the streets, that sparked condemnation from Democrats and activists.

Tensions between protesters and these officers have escalated in the past week, and local leaders have called for the federal personnel to leave the city.

Mr Trump said Portland’s mayor, Oregon’s governor and other state lawmakers were scared of the “anarchists”.

He said: “They’re afraid of these people. That’s the reason they don’t want us to help them.”

“[Federal officers] have been there three days and they really have done a fantastic job in a very short period of time, no problem. They grab a lot of people and jail the leaders. These are anarchists,” the president added.

The officers are part of a new Department of Homeland Security (DHS) unit made up of people from the US Marshals Service and Customs and Border Protection.
