Twitter says it will give @POTUS account to Biden on Inauguration Day

2 Min Read

Daily US Times: Twitter said on Friday that it will hand control of the @POTUS account to the new Biden administration on Inauguration Day on January 20th.

The @POTUS account is the official Twitter account of the President of the United States and is separate from the @realDonaldTrump account that Mr Trump uses to tweet.

Nick Pacilio, a Twitter spokesperson, said that this will also apply to about a dozen White House accounts, including the @PressSec and @FLOTUS and accounts.

In a statement. Pacilio said: “Twitter is actively preparing to support the transition of White House institutional Twitter accounts on January 20th, 2021. As we did for the presidential transition in 2017, this process is being done in close consultation with the National Archives and Records Administration.”

An archive of former president Barack Obama’s @POTUS account can be found under the handle @POTUS44. The account was also archived after Mr Trump’s Inauguration Day.

According to Politico, 0ther presidential accounts, including @VP and @whitehouse will also be moved over as well. The existing content on all of the accounts will be archived before the transfer, and the accounts will be reset to show zero tweets.

Donald Trump will continue to control his personal account, @realDonaldTrump, after Joe Biden’s inauguration, but his account will lose the special protections it gets due to Trump’s status as a world leader — meaning he will be subject to the same rules as the majority of the users on the network.
