A child almost died after becoming trapped inside a parcel storage locker without any air.
The youngster’s oxygen levels fell “dangerously low” before firefighters managed to prise open the door to the metal cupboard and free them. The firefighters are now speaking out to warn parents to be careful around the huge metal boxes which are now commonplace on high streets, retail parks and at supermarkets around the country.
Cleveland Fire Brigade has raised the alarm and say the child could have died after becoming stuck in Redcar, Teesside on Sunday. The forces spokeswoman said: “On Sunday 9th February, a call came in alerting us to a child who was trapped inside a parcel locker in a car park in Redcar. Firefighters arrived swiftly at the scene and forced open the locker door. With no ventilation inside, the child’s oxygen levels dropped dangerously low.
“Crews provided emergency oxygen therapy and ensured the child received further medical attention. This could have been fatal. The message is clear – never climb inside a confined space or a parcel locker. Help us spread this important safety message to warn young people about the life-threatening dangers of enclosed spaces.
“If you spot an open or damaged parcel locker, please report it to the provider immediately to prevent potential risks.” A post about the incident has been shared almost 400 times and one man commented: “Who on Earth lets a child climb into a parcel locker.” But one user replied: “Another child? Kids playing out and doing mad stuff maybe?”
