Daily US Times: Former President Barack Obama held back his most biting critiques of President Donald Trump in the first years of his post-presidency. Mr. Obama was hoping the lack of constant attacks to Mr Trump would make his voice even more powerful at a time he thought it was most needed.
That time is now.
According to people close to him, the former President sees his years of holding back on Trump as key to his ability to forcefully attack President Trump on behalf of Joe Biden, the former Vice President of his administration and the man running to unseat a Mr Trump, who has made sullying Obama’s legacy central to his political rise.
Obama is now joyfully castigating Trump on behalf of the Democratic candidate Joe Biden, both laying out his policy differences with Trump and leveling biting indictments of some of the Republican President’s personal obsessions. Obama, who was the first black President in America’s history, is paying close attention to Trump’s day-to-day actions and has begun to work those critiques into his speeches, needling Mr Trump for issues that Democrats know annoy him.
And it is apparent to anyone watching that the former President is enjoying the cathartic release.
Obama jokingly asked: “Can you imagine if I had a secret Chinese bank account when I was running for reelection?”
He was citing a New York Times report about a previously undisclosed bank account of President Trump holds in China.
“They would’ve called me Beijing Barry,” Mr Obama added.
That strategy will continue this weekend, when Barack Obama joins Joe Biden on the campaign trail in the key state of Michigan on Saturday.
