Sunday night held the annual Oscars and Vanity Fair after party where the star-studded Red Carpet became free game for the wild and wonderful fashion looks.
Dozens of A-list stars sat inside the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, including nominee Timothee Chalamet and his girlfriend Kylie Jenner – to celebrate the biggest films of the past year. Despite the controversy surrounding one of its lead stars, Karla Sofía Gascón, Emilia Pérez led the nominations this year, with a whopping 13 nominations, but failed to take many prizes home.
With Anora taking Best Picture and Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande performing Defying Gravity, the whirlwind evening also included some of the craziest looks Hollywood has seen so far this year.
Here, we take a look at some of the craziest outfits of the night.
American Horror Story actress Sara Paulson arrived in a puffed-up deep red dress that looked to be inflated and ended in a spherical bottom. Paulson’s peculiar gown created an exaggerated should pad effect that continued onto the bust of the dress, resembling a Frigatebird with its swollen red chest.
Though Julia Fox was guaranteed to be on the ‘weird and wonderful’ list of celeb looks, her dress last night shocked fans as the Uncut Gems muse stood nearly nude if not for the locks of hair attached to her mesh dress. Fox’s daring look may appear too soon after her ex Ye (Kanye)’s fiasco with the Grammy’s where the rapper’s wife Bianca dropped her jacket on the carpet to reveal herself completely nude par a completely see-through nude mesh dress. Facing a global scale of backlash for public indecency and criticising the nature of the West’s relationship, Fox took the opportunity to create her own take on the scandalous look.
Julia’s ‘nude dress’ however, would have caused outrage on its own, with only one difference from Bianca’s – the long wavy strands of hair over her chest and legs. Perhaps a commentary on the nature of women’s bodies as Julia is known to advocate for unique style and embracing imperfection. Whilst an admittedly artistic look, it does lead the viewer to imagine her discomfort as the curled locks seem to be tucked within the mesh.
Though less obscure than Paulson and Fox’s dresses, Zoey still made the list for the strange design of her Oscar’s dress. The Zombieland actress wore a fitted, pastel yellow dress that featured sparkling details and large furry pom-poms across the skirt. Varying in size, the pom-poms proved to be the biggest distraction from the Disney Belle it could have been.
The Barbie-themed outfit arrived over a year too late. Newton’s look included a huge pink cape that swamped the actress and hid her sequined ombre mini-dress. The Princess Peach look proved to be an awkward composition put altogether – even for the Oscars.
The singer’s jumpsuit probably scores as one of the wackiest looks of the night. In a Dsquared2 jumpsuit from their recent Fall-Winter collection, the star paid tribute to their 30 year anniversary. This follows the brands recent heat from their Milan show Dsquared2 Bros Co which showcased a performance from Grammy winner Doechii.
The look includes a nude, sheer jumpsuit with embellished detailing and elaborate flared sleeves and bottoms ending in cream feathers. The star stood tall in her glamourous, skin tight look as she posed for pics outside the Vanity Fair After Party.
The talented comedian is also an actor, singer, and playwright most known for their work in Difficult People. Cole was photographed on the Vanity Fair red carpet wearing a pinafore-styled black dress, with lacing up the sides and bows on the skirt, on top of a loose white shirt.
Her dress was accompanied by black and white striped stockings, platform pumps and several necklaces – one of which sported a pendant clock. Cole made another weird but wonderful look as they pushed the boundaries of Oscar worthy fashion whilst also remaining quite casual. It must be said that it did remind viewers of an old, cartoon pipi longstocking.
Blackish actress Tracee Ross, however, aimed straight towards the most bizarre look of the night, sporting a tasselled, feathered poncho of sorts. The rural style dress appeared to be threaded with silver and was paired with a hefty black and silver striped choker. The beige fringe dress is a recent design from Alexandre Vauthier that appears to be rooted in Native culture and was reported to have been shorn to reach her feet. Paired with a simple sling-back heel, Tracee had fun twirling around on the Carpet.
Stars were also seen to favour ballgowns, as seen on the likes of Kim Kardashian and best friends Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, as well as black, form fitted, lace dresses – which appear to be leading the most common choice and new trend from the night.
