You’re appling your concealer wrong – common mistake makes you look older

Make-up is a great tool for boosting your confidence and one woman says she’s found the best trick that makes you look years younger.

Beauty guru Nicola Chapman, who is “over 40”, shared some of her favourite make-up hacks that give her a more youthful look, as well as sharing the one concealer mistake to avoid.

The anti-ageing tips were posted on TikTok under the woman’s account @nicchapmanhaste. She says that making just a few changes to your application technique can change your whole appearance.

The expert applied the same product to each side of her face to compare results and said it’s “not about the product itself but rather the placement.”

Nicola kicked her routine off with concealer. To give a lifted effect, she applied a small amount to the inner corner of the eye, and then to a few targeted spots around the face, and a touch on the brow bone to brighten and lift the area. She said: “It’s important not to overdo it – many people apply concealer all along the under-eye, which isn’t necessary and can actually settle into fine lines, making the makeup look heavy and cakey after a short time.”

Nicola then suggested: “Instead, focus on areas where there’s natural darkness, especially the inner corners of the eyes, blending lightly for a seamless finish.”

She then moved onto bronzer and advised that instead of using it to contour and applying under the cheekbones, beauty buffs should “try placing it higher up on the cheeks”. The pro explained: “This will create a healthy, lifted look while enhancing the natural plumpness of the cheeks.”

For blush, she suggested to place the blush ‘slightly higher’ on the cheeks instead of right in the apple of the cheek. “As we age, the apples of the cheeks can drop slightly, so applying blush further back and blending upwards helps achieve a more elevated appearance,” Nicola explained.

When it comes to eyes, it’s important to try and create the illusion of lifting for a more youthful look. When it comes to eyeliner, the expert said: “Instead of drawing a straight line across the lid, try angling the brush slightly to create a small wing at the outer corner.

“This subtle adjustment helps to lift the eye. If you have less visible lid space, you can achieve a similar effect by applying shadow or liner along the lower lash line and blending upwards.”

If you want to give your brows a little more definition, Nicola advised using a power rather than a pencil or pomade as a powder will give them a “softer, fuller appearance, making them look thicker and more youthful.” She then said to use a brow gel afterwards to add texture which will create a natural finish.

To finish off the look, she told viewers to opt for a lip liner “slightly pinker than your natural lip colour” to softly define your lips. She instructed: “Blend the liner gently with your finger for a more natural finish, then top with a touch of lip balm for hydration and shine. These small, easy-to-implement makeup tweaks subtly lift and enhance the face. While the changes are minimal, they create a fresh, elevated look that’s perfect for any occasion.”
